Joseph H. THOMAS Family

Joseph H. Thomas
(1795 – 1874)
and
Sarah Jane English
(1828 – 1864)
of Savannah, Georgia

              1st Generation

Joseph and Sarah

Joseph H. THOMAS and Sarah Jane ENGLISH were married on August 6, 1849[1], by Philip M. Russell, Justice of the Peace, State of Georgia, Chatham County. Joseph was born February 12, 1795[2], in Bertie County, North Carolina. Sarah was born in circa 1828 [calculated from age shown on the 1850[3] and 1860[4] United States Federal Census] in Bryan County, Georgia, and is believed to have died in 1864. [This date was deciphered from very faint writing on the Thomas Family Bible, Family Record, Deaths Page[5].] Joseph was approximately 33 years older than Sarah.

Sarah was the daughter of Eliza (SHUMAN) and Reuben ENGLISH of Bryan County, Georgia. The first record of Sarah’s existence was found in the 1830 United States Federal Census, Bryan County, Georgia[6]. She is listed as one of two females (under age 5) belonging to Reuben ENGLISH. She is also listed as one of two females (age 10 and under age 15) on the 1840 Census, Bryan County[7]. Sarah had five brothers (William H., James R., Joseph, Jackson, and Alexander Franklin) and four sisters (Anne Matilda, Eliza, Ellen Lavinia, and Elizabeth). [Children are listed on the 1830 through 1850 U. S. Federal Census Sheets[8].]

Children of Joseph and Sarah

Mary Emma THOMAS, born December 20, 1850[9], in Georgia; died August 25, 1876[10], in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia.

Joseph Marmaduke Duncan THOMAS, born June 18, 1853[11], in Georgia; killed in railroad accident March 3, 1885[12], in Screven County, Georgia.

John Augustus THOMAS, born February 20, 1855[13] and died September 23, 1909[14], in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia.

Willy Clifford THOMAS, born October 16, 1857[15], in Chatham County, Georgia; died January 10, 1922[16], in Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia.

Idah Anna THOMAS, born June 1, 1859[17], in Georgia; died July 23, 1907[18], in Rocky Ford, Screven County, Georgia.

Jenny Tullah THOMAS, born in 1861[19] in Georgia; died August 16, 1864[20], in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia.

The Life and Times of Joseph and Sarah

During Joseph’s lifetime, books such as A Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens, Moby Dick written by Herman Melville, Uncle Tom’s Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and fairy tales written by The Brothers Grimm were published.

Joseph was 17 years old when The War of 1812 started. It is not known if he served in this war or not. When the Civil War started in 1961, he was 66 years old and probably too old to serve officially. In our Government, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution was proposed by the Thirty-eighth Congress on January 31, 1865. It was declared, in a proclamation dated December, 18, 1865, being ratified by the legislatures of 22 of the 36 states. Georgia was the last state to ratify on December 6, 1865.

Joseph lived during the time that Napoleon was attacking England and the Holy Roman Empire officially ended. He lived the history we study today!

George Washington was President when Joseph was born. Joseph lived under the leadership of the next seventeen presidents. He saw the two-party system develop. When Joseph died, Ulysses S. Grant was serving our nation as its President. I wonder if Joseph voted, and if he did vote, which men he wanted in office. I wonder what he felt and said when he heard that Lincoln had been assassinated.

Joseph and Sarah reared their family at White Bluff outside of Savannah. He worked as a net maker and a farmer. A search of the 1860–1870 Savannah newspaper archives for clues of Sarah revealed stories of islands being bombarded by the northern army. Also, during this time, a typhoid fever epidemic in Savannah was taking the lives of many. It is not known exactly how Sarah died, or the circumstances of her death. Since the family was living at White Bluff, their home may have been in the line of that fire. Their youngest child, Jenny, also died in 1864. This indicates both Sarah and Jenny may have died from the same sickness or incident. I think it was difficult for Joseph (then 69) to care for the children alone.

In 1870, Joseph and his oldest son, Joseph, Jr., were living at White Bluff alone. Mary Emma was employed as a housekeeper in the home of Henry Malcomes (who later became her husband). The boys, John Augustus and William Clifford (ages 12 and 9, respectively), were residing at Bethesda (Union Society). Ida Anna (age 11) was listed as a resident at the Female Orphan Asylum in Savannah.

It appears the family functioned as a unit until the death of Sarah. It is evident Joseph made an effort to keep the family together. Written notes inserted in the Thomas Family Bible, state her brother James and his wife, Sarah (Butler) English, “cared and reared children of Joseph – Sarah English during and after War Between States.” In April 1870, an ailing Robert E. Lee returned to Savannah. He was greeted by a huge crowd at the train station. Maybe Joseph was in the crowd.

Joseph moved to Savannah where he resided at 14 Stone Street with his oldest daughter, Mary Emma and her husband. He was living there when he died on May 13, 1874.

According to the 1870 census, Joseph could not read or write. Previous census reports did not collaborate this. I believe he could read and write. I believe it is his writing in the Thomas Bible—

“Joseph H. Thomas, Savannah, Ga June 15th 1868.”

I would like to think that Sarah’s faith was shared by Joseph and her faith became his after her death. Possibly this one inscription in his Bible meant his old life had passed away and a new faith-filled life was filling the void she left!
Getting to know this generation of my family has been exciting. I only wish I had been more inquisitive when my father and grandfather were living. So many questions with no answers! I assume Joseph lived the early part of his life in North Carolina or possibly Wales. I have concluded that it could be very likely that Joseph had a family before Sarah due to the large gap in their ages. I wonder—if he did, what happened to them. There is also a possibility he may have cared for aging parents or younger siblings. I wonder if his middle initial “H” represented his mother’s maiden name. I wonder if Noah and Catherine Harrel [listed in his home in the 1860 Census[12]] could have been related to him. I wonder if Sarah was visiting her sister at Edisto Island in South Carolina and met Joseph there. Just maybe she is the reason he made his way to Savannah. One day I may know, but for now, I can only wonder.

I believe I would have enjoyed spending time with Joseph and Sarah and felt right at home in their company. I think Joseph was a man of the sea and probably carried the scent of the saltwater air as my daddy did. I think Sarah was a dutiful wife and mother. I think she continued her family ties with her own family, enjoying many happy times in the homes of her parents and siblings.

Property

In 2006, Ann Myrick made a search for the property owned by Joseph and found that the Chatham County records indicated the 14 Stone Street home was owned by Joseph. Today, a multi-story, city parking lot stands in this space.

Ann also discovered that Joseph owned part of Burnside Island with friend/partner Marmaduke Brown. [It is noted that Marmaduke Brown, age 30, is listed in Joseph’s household in the 1850 Census[23].] There may be some truth, therefore, to the family legend of Joseph once owning Burnside Island. His grandchildren told the next generation that it was taken away from him by a “shyster lawyer.” This story was told to me by my father (son of Raymond Mitchell THOMAS, Sr., (grandson of Joseph)) and was told to Ann by her Aunt Miriam THOMAS (great-granddaughter of Joseph THOMAS).

What Is Not Known About Joseph

We do not know

          1.  the names of his parents.

          2.  if he had siblings.

          3.  where he was born. Census records report his birth in “Bertie County, North Carolina;” or just “North Carolina.” In the Thomas Family Bible, his birth is recorded as happening in “Cardiff, Wales.”

          4.  what brought him to Georgia.

          5.  where, when, or how he met Sarah.

          6.  which, if any, church affiliation he had. Sarah came from a family who seemed to have a deep faith as her father donated land in Ellabell, Georgia, for the building of a Methodist Church there.

          7.  if he had a wife and family prior to his marriage to Sarah.

  1. Fascinating post and appreciate the fact that you source your information. What program do you use and do you do anything special to put it into your blog?

  2. Thanks for your post. The first part (narrative and sources) was created in MS Word. The second part was exported from my Family Tree Maker 2011 file to a rich text file. I then copied that file and used cut and paste to the PAGE feature. I added the paragraph returns to separate the people just to give it a little more definition. After it was on the PAGE I inserted the photos.

  3. I can't believe all the work you've put into this! I have a beginning to several branches of my and John's families, and worked with a 1st cousin once removed this summer in Virginia. She has done a lot, but her computer skills will never make it anything close to yours. It's nice to see what CAN be done!
